Candle Care & Safety

A few simple habits will make your 405 Craft candle burn cleaner, smell stronger, and last longer. Here’s everything you need to know.

Before You Light

First Burn Matters Most

  • Let the wax melt all the way across the jar on the first burn, usually 2–4 hours. This sets the candle’s “memory” and prevents tunneling, the hollow ring of wasted wax down the center.
  • Trim the wick to ¼ inch before every burn for a cleaner flame, less soot, and truer scent. Pinch trimmed bits off the wax.

Every Time You Burn

  • Keep burn sessions to 2–4 hours at a time.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended: extinguish before leaving the room or sleeping.
  • Keep candles away from drafts, vents, and fans.
  • Burn on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from anything flammable and out of reach of children and pets.
  • Keep the wax pool free of wick trimmings, matches, and dust.

When to Stop

  • Discontinue use when ½ inch of wax remains to avoid overheating the glass. Wash the cooled jar with warm soapy water and repurpose it.
  • If the flame gets too high or smokes, extinguish, cool, trim the wick, and relight.

Storage

  • Store in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Heat and UV fade color and fragrance, especially in our natural coconut apricot blend wax.
  • Keep the wooden lid on between burns to keep dust out and lock the scent in.

Fixing Tunneling

  • Wrap the top of the jar in foil, shiny side in, leaving a center hole for the flame, and burn for an hour or two. The trapped heat levels the wax back out.
