Incense Care & Burning
Handmade incense is simple to enjoy and rewards a little patience. Here’s how to store it, burn it, and stay safe.
Storage
- Keep incense in a cool, dry place away from sunlight, ideally in its original sealed jar or an airtight container.
- Do not refrigerate or freeze. Moisture ruins the burn. Properly stored, handmade incense holds its scent for many months.
How to Burn
- Place one incense piece in a heat-resistant burner or holder on a stable, fireproof surface.
- Light the tip, let the flame catch for a few seconds, then gently blow it out. The tip should glow and smolder.
- One piece is usually plenty for a room. Add a second for larger or open areas.
Safety
- Never leave burning incense unattended. Extinguish fully before leaving the room or sleeping.
- Keep away from flammable materials, curtains, and paper, and out of reach of children and pets.
- Burn in a well-ventilated room but away from direct drafts that scatter hot ash.
- Always use a holder that catches all ash. Let ash cool completely before discarding.
Getting the Best Experience
- Give it a minute or two. Handmade incense blooms gradually, and the full fragrance character develops as it smolders.
- If the smoke feels strong, crack a window. A little fresh air carries the scent beautifully.
